GATE International Magnet

Cowan Avenue Elementary’s Gifted/High-Ability International Humanities Magnet Center was founded in September 2009. It was created to produce well-rounded students, who would develop not only academic acumen through a rigorous GATE curriculum, but also build global awareness and civic-minded leadership skills, through participation in a model United Nations compact with a focus on the organization’s Millennial Goals or Global Goals for Sustainability. Facilitating the development of the global mindset with a genuine appreciation for international diversity is at the heart of Cowan Magnet’s mission.

To impart leadership skills, Cowan continues its focus on the United Nation’s icons that represent its Global Goals for Sustainability. These icons help our students develop leadership skills by providing them with a platform to best understand the complex social, economic, and political issues that the international community faces. Topics addressed through these icons lend themselves to integrated academic lessons focused on the traditional sciences, as well as, political and social sciences, including climate change, rights to clean water, quality education, and gender equality.

Through Cowan’s international curriculum coupled with the icons of Depth and Complexity created by Dr. Sandra Kaplan to embody gifted standards in education, Cowan students are educated to become critical thinkers with a keen ability to communicate and substantiate complex ideas. In accord with Cowan’s magnet goals and using grade level appropriate academic standards, our students begin to develop a mindset that allows them to approach topics with an eye for universal GATE themes, including changes over time, multiple perspectives, trends, and systems.
